Journalists and politicians discussed one of the most formidable themes of our time – terrorism

"Terrorism and the Electronic Media" was the theme of the 13-th edition of the international conference which was held in Sofia between September, 27-29.

The conference was organized by the International Academy for Television and Radio with the support of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation. Chief partner of the Information Security Forum is the well-known "Kaspersky Lab".  Union of Bulgarian Journalists was the Bulgariam partner of the conference.

The forum was attended by many well-known journalists and politicians from different countries. "This problem and trouble are becoming more and more dangerous," said at the opening session Leonid Mlechin, Chairman of the Board of the International Academy for Television and Radio,.

He underlined that in Sofia they met in order to discuss the ways which the media are using to reflect terrorism and counter-terrorism allover the world. “While at the beginning  - 13 years ago -  the topic was how journalists behave in the hot spots, today the situation is quite different – to discuss how to write about the danger” he added.

The organizers of the conference  proposed “working rules” which have been accepted by the participants. According to them  “the main objective of the meeting is to pay the  attention of the global media  representatives community, as well as of the interested national state and public organizations to the problem:  how to counteract the global terrorism through the electronic media.

The Head of the Historical  and Publicistic Programs Directorate for the Public Broadcasting Television Channel, Vladimir Kozlov, made a detailed analys of the terrorist acts during the years of the last century and today. According to him, if we leave Africa and the Middle East, where thousands of people die, we will see that terrorist attacks in Europe have fallen today.

A guest of the forum was the Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Krasimir Karakachanov. Recalling the bloody assault in Sarafovo, he stressed that the topic of terrorism is up to date and continues to be a threat to all of us. According to him, each country is threatened by the radicalization. Karakachanov said that the attempts at radicalization are directed mainly towards Roma in ghettos and Bulgarian Muslims in the Rhodope Mountains communities, living in very difficult conditions.

All external efforts are directed towards them, and cultural structures are being funded and created for this purpose.

He announced that the cabinet is preparing legislative proposals on issues of funding for religious denominations and on the subject of the human resources, dealing with the confession of one or another religion. The Minister of Defence is on the opinion that social measures as well as a social program for these regions are mandatory.

The last day of the 13th International Conference "Terrorism and the Electronic Media" went “under the banner” of debates related to cyber terrorism and information wars. They are one of the new major threats to national and international security.

How can civil society and the electronic media confront the heroism of terrorism and terrorists? How can the fight against the propaganda of hatred and violence, for which the journalists' professionalism also be responsible? Theese issues were also at the topic of the discussions.

123 journalists and experts from 23 countries, including Russia, Bulgaria, Belarus, Belgium, Great Britain, Greece, Serbia, Croatia, Spain, Italy, China, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Romania and others, took part in the conference. Their representatives sent also United Nations, UNESCO and  OSCE.

СБЖ отново настоява Народното събрание да обърне внимание на внесените преди повече от година наши предложения за законодателни промени в защита на журналистическия труд и свободата на медиите. Изискваме да се увеличи наказанието за посегателство над журналисти и то да се определи в Наказателния кодекс като квалифициращ признак от съответните състави на престъпление - заплахи, телесни повреди, убийства и пр.

На сърдития на цял свят премиер Бойко Борисов медиите, опозицията и чужденците са му виновни за „охулването” на държавата, която именно неговото управление докара дотам, че на всички да изглежда логично убийството на журналистка, посмяла да засегне темата за корупцията
